The California Lighthouse

Located on the northwest tip of Aruba, the California Lighthouse is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks. Standing tall at 98 feet, this historic lighthouse was completed in 1916 and was named after the ill-fated S.S. California, which wrecked off the coast of Aruba in 1891. The lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding ships along the island’s rocky shores, and it still stands today as a beacon of Aruba’s maritime history. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking to enjoy breathtaking views, the California Lighthouse is a must-see on your Aruba trip.

The Shipwreck and History

The story of the S.S. California begins on the night of September 23, 1891, when the ship, traveling from Liverpool to South America, crashed into Aruba’s rocky northwest coast. The ship was carrying a variety of cargo, including furniture, clothing, and canned goods, which washed ashore after the wreck. The locals gathered these items, and the remaining cargo was recovered and sold in Oranjestad. This event highlighted the need for a lighthouse in the area to help guide ships safely.

The Construction of the Lighthouse

In 1913, a petition for a lighthouse to be built on the island’s northern coast was approved. Construction began in 1915, and the lighthouse was completed in 1916. Along with the lighthouse, two houses, a cistern, and a staircase were built to provide access to the lighthouse keeper’s residence. However, due to World War I, the light was delayed in being shipped from France and was finally turned on in 1919. Over the years, several local families took turns maintaining the lighthouse.

The Lighthouse Today

The California Lighthouse became automated in 1970, eliminating the need for a keeper. Despite this, the lighthouse remains operational and has become one of Aruba’s most recognized historical landmarks. Visitors can now tour the site and enjoy the spectacular views of the island’s northern coastline. Recently, the lighthouse opened to the public in 2015, offering a chance to explore the structure up close and learn about its history.
